Youtube Stardom

His new protégé, Justin Bieber, had YouTube. At 12, Bieber was postinghomemade videos of himself on YouTube and industry insiders starting taking notice.
“It had a hundred views, then a thousand views, then ten thousand views, so I just kept posting more videos and more videos,” Justin, now 15, says in a soft voice. “Eventually, I got found by my manager who flew me to Atlanta to meet Usher.”

After Justin Beiber’s story came out about how he became a star through posting videos on Youtube, an outbreak of people have been uploading their videos on Youtube in hopes of the same thing happening to them. In a negative light, there are more and more videos of people singing badly in their bathroom or bathroom. In a positive light, you get to hear a variety of people sing and make their own music.
Lately, I’ve been crazy about youtube videos of cover songs. Sometimes I find that the cover songs are actually better than the original song. Whether it be because the video is edited or the person singing is actually good, I don’t know. I like to believe in the latter as naive as that may be. The video above is of Sam Tsui and Nick Pitera singing “For Good” from the muscial, Wicked. This is my favorite cover song at the moment. Not only are they singing one of my favorite songs of all time, but their voices are amazing.
There are many cover songs that I have found where the cover artist is actually better than the original artist. (However, there are certainly people who can’t hold a candle to the original artist) It especially applies to those songs that are really annoying, but with a slightly different beat and tempo, it has the potential to be a great song. For example, the song “Hold it Against Me” by Britney Spears annoys me so much. Its just something about her music that throws me off. However, the cover song sung by Sam Tsui is one of my favorite songs. He changed the melody and tempo which makes it sound like a legitimate and powerful love song.

Another cover artist I really like is Jason Chen and Joseph Vincent. They are two different artists that do covers either with each other or with other popular Youtube singers. Here’s one song that they did together. It’s “Hold My Hand” by Michael Jackson and Akon.
Jason Chen and Joseph Vincent both have popular Youtube stars and not only sing cover songs, but mix in a bit of their own originals too. Personally, I think Jason Chen is the better singer of the two.
Youtube allows artist to have free expression for all ages. Maddi Jane is a 13 year old girl with an amazing voice. The range of notes she can hit at such a young age makes me excited to see how she will be when she’s older.
The Youtube singers I like are those that sing because they genuinely enjoy it. I know most of them are secretly hoping for a record label, but it doesn’t mean they love doing it any less. I also like the freedom that they have to take songs and make them into however they want it. So tell me, are cover artists as cool as I’m making them? Or are they just posers? Any cover songs you like? Lemme know! I love discovering new music.

Another great thing about this explosion of youtube music is the original songs that are being produced. The covers are great but most of the time the artists are trying to sound exactly like the original song. Users that are making original music and putting it on youtube are also getting attention in this music boom. People like Alex Carpenter (just search him for a ton of videos) who make music about nerdy youtube subjects are fantastic and are more publicized now thanks to Beiber’s fame.

I agree with robotrash in that the covers normally are only good if they are done but re-done with a new sound kind of like a kris Allen remake of heartless by kanye or karment re-doing “look at me now” by Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes. I like those kind of re-makes.

So to answer that question, I do believe that covers are extremely good. They aren’t just posers, and what’s even better is that you can see normal everyday people on youtube doing covers. Whether they sing it well or not is a totally different question. I personally have played guitar for a while, and have done very many covers. But to actually muster up the courage to record and load in else takes a lot of time. Every single time you record, you always find one thing that you want ti fix. Then once you fix it, you’ll find another thing to fix. It’s an endless process, and then to actually be able to let others watch it is also nerve-wrecking.

I do believe that youtube can make people famous, like Justin Bieber.

“His new protégé, Justin Bieber, had YouTube.” I stopped reading there. Improper grammar is the worst thing anyone can possess, especially on the internet, where intellectuallity dominates the blogesphere. You also claim he was “postinghomemade videos”, but what the hell is a postinghomemade? You should be ashamed of yourself for making such improper mistakes, try rereading your work over next time, and maybe you’ll be able to make a successful point. Better luck next time.

i love covers, but they have to be different than the origional. Say Jessica Smith wants to be a singer so she thinks “i’ll do a cover of a really popular Adele song, cause everyone likes Adele.” Well i bet Jessica is going to try to sing it just like Adele does and she’s going to majorly butcher it and ruin the song for everyone who listens to it

I do really like cover songs that I find off of YouTube (especially the cover of “You’ve Got The Love” covered by The xx), but I’m not going to say that I like the covers more than the originals, in most cases. It takes a lot of talent to surpass the popularity/greatness of the original artist, but the covers can be just as good as the original. For example, the choir PS22. If anyone hasn’t heard of that choir, YouTube them right now. It’s a choir of kids that cover popular songs, including “Telephone” by Lady Gaga, “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele, and much, much more. I LOVE listening to their music, not only because it sounds so incredibly good, but it also just puts smile on my face to see all of those kids put their talents to work. Here’s a link about the choir and a sample of some of their music! http://www.youtube.com/user/agreggofsociety?blend=7&ob=5

Not to be closed minded, but typically, I don’t like cover songs nearly as much as the originals. It’s like the same thing as movie sequels, it’s extremely hard to live up the the origninal. However, there are always exceptions. For example, my older brother’s friends are in a band called the Jalapeno Heads, and they do a cover of the Maroon 5 song called Misery, and I like it just as much if not more than the original. I am always open to new artisitc and musical intepretations, but sometimes, it’s just hard to beat the classics.
